This month, I asked four expert real estate agents here in Hampton Roads a simple question:
What’s the biggest mistake homebuyers make?
I received great answers and want to share them with you. Please check out the websites for each agent and feel free to contact them if you have further questions.
1. Lavette Bell, RE/MAX
“The biggest mistake homebuyers make is not trusting that the agent has their best interest. Your agent negotiates the best deal possible for you and also manages the entire home buying process so you’re not stressed out.”
2. Doug Van Liew, The Real Estate Group
“The biggest mistake is not asking for a consultation with a Realtor at the start of the process. During a consultation, you learn what to expect in the current market and develop a sound strategy to find the perfect home. The consultation will save time and money — plus, it will make the entire process easier.”
3. Reanne Haverty, Anchor Realty
“A couple of things that buyers should keep in mind: be open to homes that may need some updating and be ready to commit when you find the right home. You should definitely look for the home that meets your needs, but don’t get discouraged if you aren’t finding exactly what you want. Use your network, or your real estate agent’s network, to find great contractors that can help bring your vision to life.”
4. Julie Kandlinger, Keller Williams
“Don’t shop for homes way out of your price range expecting to negotiate when making an offer. Understand the housing market! Hampton Roads has a low inventory of homes at the moment that often sell above asking price due to multiple offers. Be prepared for some competition when you’re hunting for homes and have some extra cash ready for closing costs or to make a higher bid on the home you fell in love with.”
