Water Testing when you have an Individual and Shared Well

This week, I have been reading a lot about the lead-contaminated water supply in Flint, Michigan, which has caused health problems for residents (mostly children). If you haven’t heard about the story, please take the time to read more about it. This got me thinking about individual and shared water supply.

According to FHA/VA guidelines:

“When an Individual and Shared Water Supply System is present, the lender must ensure that the water quality meets the requirements of the health authority with jurisdiction. If there are no local (or state) water quality standards, then water quality must meet the standards set by the EPA, as presented in the National Primary Drinking Water regulations.

The water analysis is valid for 30 day if the property is vacant, and 90 days if the property is occupied.”

Note that currently the analysis required by lenders is in regards to coliform and bacteria.

Again, take time to read about the Flint situation. It will make you grateful we have clean drinking water here in Hampton Roads.
